Biosphere Reserves in India


Concept

  • was started by UNESCO in 1974 under Man and Biosphere Program (MAB)
  • basic aim is to conserve of BD in a representative ecosystem (of species)
  • 3-fold objective 
    • CONSERVATION : in-situ conservation of BD and also of ecosystem
    • DEVELOPMENT : sustainable eco. dev. of people living inside and nearby
    • KNOWLEDGE : to provide facilities for long term ecological studies, env training, edu., research and monitoring
  • Management through zones
    • Core area - min activity except some low key research and edu., eco-tourism
    • Buffer area
    • Transitional area
  • UNESCO has also come up with a World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
